Austin Adults with Disabilities Social Group: Therapeutic Art @ The Charles Johnson House
Jul 31 @ 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm
Austin Adults with Disabilities Social Group: Therapeutic Art @ The Charles Johnson House

A therapeutic session to utilize art as a medium for developing coping skills and exploring emotions through art,” or something of that nature. This Social Service art intervention, with a focus on coping skills, will be lead by Mark Morrow, an LPC with the Mobile Art Program through VSA Texas. https://vsatx.org/

We will do a collage activity where participants create a self-portrait, and half the portrait represents physical characteristics, and the other half is images of personal interests (outside self vs inside self); things we see and things people would not know about us just looking at our appearance.

There is an optional presentation component with this project where each artist is allowed to talk about their piece; what they are happy with, what was challenging, what the components are that people would not know just looking at them and why they are significant, answer questions from peers, and allow peers to comment on what they like about each piece; developing a positive supportive environment.

*YOU MUST RSVP IN ADVANCE TO ENSURE A PROPER HEAD COUNT. IF YOU DO NOT RSVP BY THE CUTOFF DATE, I CANNOT ENSURE WE WILL HAVE ENOUGH FOOD FOR YOU*

Meetings are informal and open to all parents and other adult family caregivers of adults with disabilities who require ongoing support and guidance through their adult lives.  There is no charge for attending.

Parents attend as their schedule (and traffic) allows. Feel free to join us for whatever time you can spare.  Our meetings vary in content. We frequently have a speaker to keep us informed. We also have unstructured meetings, just giving us time to share what we have in common and what resources we may have come across that are helpful.
